Keeping my electricity bills manageable became difficult last summer, when the utility increased peak-hour rates. I already had rooftop solar, but without battery storage, I sent most of my afternoon generation straight back to the grid. I finally installed a 5kWh lithium battery with a 3kW hybrid inverter after comparing the 1kva inverter price against larger systems.
The installation took most of a morning. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, beside the existing inverter, and added a battery management system with a simple phone app. I was relieved that the wiring did not require opening walls; the only surprise was that the battery needed a stronger Wi-Fi signal than I expected. A small mesh extender fixed that same day.
What I notice most is the evening change. Before storage, my solar panels stopped helping around 5 p.m., exactly when cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning started. Now the battery takes over as the sun drops. I usually charge it fully by late afternoon and discharge between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., when my household uses the most power. That has reduced my monthly grid bill by roughly 30 to 40 percent, although the exact saving changes with cloudy weather and how often we run the dryer.
During one stormy week, the battery reached empty before dinner, which was disappointing, but it also showed me the value of the app's reserve setting. I raised backup reserve from 10 percent to 25 percent, so there is enough energy for short outages. That reduced usable capacity slightly, but I prefer keeping the refrigerator, router, and a few lights running if the grid fails.
I check the state of charge with my morning coffee. It is not completely hands-off, but self-consumption mode has made my solar panels more useful and peak rates less painful for me daily.
