Keeping our solar battery for six months has changed the way I think about electricity at home. Before installation, I mostly used power whenever I needed it, even during expensive evening hours. Now the lithium battery stores excess solar energy from late morning, and my inverter releases it after sunset.
The most noticeable difference is my peak-hour bill. Our utility charges more between 4pm and 9pm, which used to be exactly when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and turning on the heat pump. I changed the battery settings to prioritize those hours. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100% by mid-afternoon. We then get through most of the evening without buying much grid electricity. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly $45–$70, depending on weather and how much laundry we do.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its scheduled start time. The monitoring app showed “standby,” but no error. I checked the inverter first, then noticed the time zone had reset during the update. Correcting it fixed everything immediately. Since then I have left the system alone, aside from checking the state of charge once or twice a week.
When I researched the 5kwh battery price, I worried that a smaller unit would not make enough difference. We draw from the grid on cloudy stretches, but the battery handles our evening load well. I see the result clearly whenever I compare weekly usage. The main lesson for me is that battery savings depend on timing, not just storage capacity. If the battery is full before peak rates begin, it earns its keep. That's why I now run heavy appliances earlier and treat the home energy storage system as part of our daily routine, rather than a set and forget purchase.
