Nearly six months ago, I added a 10kWh lithium battery to my rooftop solar system because our evening electricity use was pushing us into expensive peak rates. I paired it with an inverter hybrid 5kw, and it has been more useful than expected.
Before the battery, my panels produced plenty during the day, but we exported a lot of that power for a small credit, then bought electricity back after dinner. Now the battery charges from solar around lunchtime and runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through the evening. On sunny weekdays, it reaches 100% by mid-afternoon. I set a 20% reserve, leaving backup capacity for outages.
The biggest practical difference shows up on my bill. My utility statement used to average about $210 in summer. After installing the solar battery, my last three summer bills averaged $128. That is roughly $82 saved per month, though weather and air-conditioning obviously change the result. I am not claiming complete energy independence, but peak-hour consumption has dropped sharply.
I did have one small scare during the first week. The monitoring app showed the battery stopping at 82%, even with clear skies. I checked the settings and found the charger had been limited to protect against a temporary grid voltage issue. Once that cleared, the system returned to normal charging. The installer also explained that battery temperature and reserve settings can affect the displayed capacity, which saved me from assuming the hardware had failed.
What I like most is the quiet routine. I rarely think about it now: solar charges the battery, the battery carries the house, and the inverter switches over automatically. Personally, I look closely at usable capacity, monitoring quality, and warranty—not just the headline storage number.
