Our electricity bills became frustrating last summer, especially when the air conditioner ran through the evening peak. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in September, mainly to use more of my rooftop solar after sunset instead of sending it cheaply back to the grid. I jokingly call the setup my solar household powerwall, although it is a separate wall-mounted solar battery, not the brand-name product.

The biggest difference showed up on ordinary weekdays. By lunchtime, the solar panels usually charge the battery to around 90 or 100 percent. Once our utility’s expensive hours begin, the battery takes over automatically. We cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and use lights without pulling much electricity from the grid. Before installation, our summer bills were often around $210. Since adding the energy storage system, they have generally landed between $125 and $145, depending on the weather. That is not a dramatic overnight transformation, but saving roughly $70 to $85 a month during the high-use season feels very real.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging during peak hours for two evenings. The monitoring app showed it was connected, but the power-flow screen stayed stuck on “standby.” I restarted the inverter and checked the operating schedule, then discovered the update had reset my peak-rate times. Re-entering the utility schedule fixed it immediately. Since then, I check the app once a week, mostly to confirm the battery state of charge and solar production.

The system has also been useful during short outages. It does not run the entire house indefinitely, but it keeps the refrigerator, internet, lights, and a few outlets working without any fuss. My main advice is to compare battery capacity with your actual evening consumption. I could have bought a larger solar battery, but this size covers my routine loads without paying for storage I rarely need.
