hybrid solar system with battery

Yesterday I checked my electricity app before coffee and saw our battery had carried us through the night without pulling much from the grid.

We installed a hybrid solar system with battery last autumn, mainly because our evening electricity use is higher than our daytime use. The solar panels produce plenty while we're out, but previously we bought power after dinner, when rates were at their worst.

The setup itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the lithium iron phosphate battery in our garage, connected it to the inverter, and explained the monitoring app. I asked plenty of questions about backup power. Our first test was simple: I switched off the main breaker during dinner. The lights flickered once, then the refrigerator, router, and living-room lamps kept running. That small test made the solar battery feel real, not just another line item on an invoice.

The biggest practical difference is peak-hour savings. I set the battery to charge from excess solar during the afternoon and discharge from 4 to 9 p.m. On sunny days, it covers cooking, laundry, and our heat-pump water heater. Our monthly bill has fallen from roughly $180 in summer to around $95, although I know weather and utility prices make the comparison imperfect. Still, seeing fewer expensive grid kilowatt-hours on the bill is satisfying.

We did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 100% while the inverter displayed an error. I called support, restarted the system, and discovered the update had temporarily disabled grid charging. Nothing was actually wrong with the battery, and it resumed normal operation that evening.

I do not pretend the storage system makes us energy independent. On cloudy days, we still draw from the utility. I value the quieter, more predictable bills.
