2 months ago, I added a 5kWh solar battery to my small rooftop solar setup, and the difference has been most noticeable after sunset.
Before installation, my panels sent plenty of electricity back to the grid during the afternoon, while I bought power from the utility between 5 and 9 p.m. I chose a lithium iron phosphate battery because I wanted a safer, longer-lasting option rather than chasing the cheapest battery bank.
The installer connected it to the hybrid inverter, added a wall-mounted battery cabinet, and programmed it to charge from solar and discharge during peak hours. Setup was easier than I expected, although the electrician had to replace one undersized cable after checking the voltage drop.
I also considered 12v 26ah lithium batteries for a DIY backup, but decided a professionally integrated home energy storage system suited my main panel better.
The first week was mostly about watching the app. It showed solar generation, battery state of charge, and household consumption in real time. I quickly learned to run the dishwasher and washing machine before dinner while there was sunlight. Once the battery reached 100 percent, the extra solar still went to the grid, but my evening imports dropped sharply.
On my first full billing cycle, I used about 70% less grid electricity during peak hours. My bill fell from roughly $168 to $112, despite similar weather and usage. That is around $56 saved in one month, not a marketing estimate from a calculator. The savings vary with cloudy days and how much cooking we do, but the battery has consistently covered our evening lights, refrigerator, router, and television.
At one point, the monitoring app showed the battery stuck at 22% overnight. I checked the breaker and saw it had tripped after a brief utility outage. Resetting it restored operation.
