280ah deep cycle battery

8 months ago I added a 280ah deep cycle battery to my small rooftop solar system, mainly because our evening electricity use was getting expensive. The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. My electrician mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and programmed the solar battery to charge from excess daytime production. I kept the existing panels, so there was no roof work or complicated rewiring.

The first week taught me more than the specifications did. On sunny days, the battery reached full charge by midafternoon, then carried the house through dinner, lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a couple of fans. I watched the battery monitor while cooking and noticed our grid consumption stayed nearly flat until bedtime.

That changed my peak-hour bill more than I expected. Before storage, our utility meter raced between 5 and 9 p.m.; afterward, those expensive hours were mostly supplied by stored solar power. My monthly bill dropped by roughly 30 percent, although the exact saving depends on weather and how much laundry we run. I do not claim the battery eliminated my bill; winter clouds and standby loads still show up.

The practical win is that I no longer feel forced to avoid using the oven or washing machine during peak pricing. One small troubleshooting moment came during a storm, when the inverter displayed a battery communication warning. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the cable connections, and the warning disappeared after a few minutes.

Since then, the solar storage system has been quiet and predictable. I check the state of charge occasionally, keep the battery between its recommended limits, and let the charge controller handle work. For my household, this lithium battery is less about energy independence and more about making solar power useful after sunset, when rates hurt.
