Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running my solar battery system has changed how I think about electricity bills, especially during the evening peak. I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, after watching too much of my rooftop solar disappear back to the grid at midday.
The setup was more straightforward than I expected. The installer mounted the cabinet, connected the battery storage unit to my hybrid inverter, and configured charge and discharge times. I asked for charging from solar only, with a reserve of 25% for outages. By dinner, the app showed exactly what I wanted to see: the battery filling in the afternoon and powering the house after sunset.
That timing has made the biggest difference to my bill. Before the battery, we regularly used the oven, heat-pump water heater, dishwasher, and lights between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m., when electricity rates were highest. Now the battery handles most of that window. On a normal sunny day, it reaches 100% by about 2:30 p.m. and falls to roughly 35% by bedtime. My monthly bill has dropped from around $210 to $125, on average, despite using the same appliances. That is about $85 saved each month, or enough to cover the battery payment difference in my budget.
The only hiccup came during a week of cloudy weather. The state of charge stalled at 18%, and the inverter briefly stopped discharging. I found a warning about low solar input, but the app did not explain much. After restarting the inverter and checking the battery breaker, everything resumed. I later learned the battery was protecting itself from deep discharge, not failing.
I chose a grade a lifepo4 280ah battery with a dependable BMS for my home.
