Originally, I bought a home energy storage system because my evening electricity bills were getting ridiculous. I already had rooftop solar, but most of its production disappeared back to the grid while we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and charged phones. The battery has changed that routine.

My installer fitted a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside the inverter in our garage. The installation took most of a day, including updating the monitoring app and showing me how to set a backup reserve. I chose 20%, so there is enough capacity for an outage without sacrificing too much usable storage. Setup was painless, although the Wi-Fi connection dropped twice during commissioning.

The biggest difference appears after sunset. On sunny days, the solar panels fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Once the time-of-use rate starts at 4:30, the battery supplies the house. Before installation, our highest daily usage often cost around $3.50. Now a similar day is usually about $1.20, depending on weather. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $95-110 over the first two months. It is not magic—the fixed connection charge remains, and cloudy weeks still hurt—but the savings feel real.

I did have one scare. During a storm, the app showed the battery at zero even though the power was on. I checked the breakers, restarted the gateway, and waited ten minutes. It recovered after the inverter completed a firmware update. Since then, I keep the battery reserve at 30% during storm season and check alerts weekly.

For me, the best part is not independence. It is using my own solar power at dinner instead of buying it at the worst possible rate. The solar battery has made our home more predictable, and I would choose that capacity again.
