Our solar battery changed how I use electricity more than I expected. Before installing it, my rooftop solar panels sent most of their daytime production back to the grid while I bought power again in the evening. Now the battery stores that surplus and runs the house after sunset, which has made the biggest difference to my monthly bill.

I chose a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery as part of a home electricity backup system. Installation took most of a day. The electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup-loads panel, and tested the changeover several times. I kept the refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, and a few outlets on the backup circuit rather than trying to power the whole house. That seemed more practical than paying for a much larger system.

The savings are easiest to notice during peak hours. I usually charge the battery from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon, then use it for cooking, lighting, and television in the evening. My utility’s expensive evening period used to account for a surprisingly large part of the bill. Over the first three months, my electricity costs fell by roughly 35 percent compared with the same season last year. Weather and household usage vary, so I am not treating that figure as guaranteed, but the change is clear on my bills.

The most reassuring moment came during a short outage. The lights flickered once, the inverter clicked, and everything connected to the backup panel kept running. My Wi-Fi did not even disconnect. I did notice the battery reserve had been set too low in the app, leaving only about 15 percent available for emergencies. I raised the reserve to 25 percent, and I now check the battery monitor every few days.

It has not eliminated my power bill, but this solar energy storage setup makes my solar panels more useful, reduces peak-rate purchases, and gives me quiet peace of mind when the grid goes down.
