.After installing my home battery last spring, I stopped thinking of solar power as something that disappeared at sunset. My 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery charges from the roof during the afternoon, then carries the house through the expensive evening period. That simple change has made the biggest difference to my electricity bill and my routine without much effort at all.
Before the battery, I averaged about $180 a month in summer. Now I usually land between $110 and $125, depending on cloudy weather and air-conditioning use. The savings are not perfectly consistent, but avoiding grid electricity during peak hours is reliable. My utility has time-of-use pricing, so the battery begins discharging at 4:00 p.m. and often lasts until 10:00 p.m.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. I used a hybrid inverter with a wall-mounted battery, and the electrician finished the wiring in one day. I specifically chose 3.2 v lifepo4 batteries for the pack because I wanted a chemistry known for steady cycling and reasonable indoor safety. The monitoring app shows state of charge, solar production, and household consumption.
My only annoying moment came during the first heat wave. The battery stopped discharging at 18% even though the app showed normal operation. I initially blamed the solar panels, but the inverter log showed a reserve setting had been enabled accidentally. After lowering that reserve to 10%, the system behaved normally. I appreciated finding the cause without calling anyone overnight.
What I like most is the quiet predictability. During daylight, I can run laundry and charge tools directly from solar, while the battery fills in the background. In the evening, I barely notice it working except when the dishwasher starts and the lights remain bright. That feels more useful than watching numbers climb in an app on my phone at night.
