Running our solar battery at home has changed the way I think about electricity, especially during the evening peak period. Before installing storage, our panels produced plenty of energy at lunchtime, but we still bought expensive power after dinner. Now the battery charges from excess solar and usually carries the house from around 5 p.m. until bedtime.
The system uses a growatt string inverter paired with a home battery. The installer handled the wiring and app connection in one afternoon, then showed me how to set the battery’s charge and discharge schedule. I selected self-consumption mode, with a reserve of 20 percent for outages.
The biggest difference appears on hot weekdays. We run the air conditioner when we get home, cook dinner, and use the dishwasher, all while the battery is discharging instead of the grid. My electricity bills have fallen by roughly 35 to 45 percent compared with the same months before storage. The exact saving changes with weather and tariffs, but seeing evening grid imports nearly disappear is satisfying. I still import power on cloudy days, so the battery is not magic, but it has made our solar investment much more useful.
I did have a troubleshooting moment. One morning the monitoring app showed the battery as “standby” even though the sun was shining. I checked the inverter display and found that the battery had reached its reserve overnight; after a system restart, it began charging normally. The installer later explained that a firmware update had paused charging. Since then, I have paid more attention to battery state of charge rather than panicking at a single app notification.
For me, storage is less about energy independence and more about using the solar power I already generate. Quiet operation, predictable peak-hour savings, and simple monitoring have made it a worthwhile upgrade.
