Replacing my old rooftop solar setup with a battery changed how I use electricity.
I chose a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery because we use most power after dinner. During sunny afternoons, it charges from excess panels instead of sending power to the grid, then carries us through the expensive evening period.
The difference showed up quickly on my utility bill. Before installation, a typical summer month was around $185. After similar weather, it fell to $96. That is not a perfect comparison, but saving roughly $89 feels real. The best part is seeing the battery at 35 to 45 percent at dinner instead of pulling from the grid.
I had one small troubleshooting scare. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped reporting battery state of charge in the app. The system still powered the house, so I stayed calm. I opened the growatt solar login page on my phone, checked the Wi-Fi connection, and restarted the communications dongle. About ten minutes later, battery monitoring returned. The battery never stopped working; only the dashboard went quiet.
In daily use, I keep the battery reserve at 25 percent for outages. I do not chase every possible kilowatt-hour, because preserving backup capacity matters more to me than squeezing out another few cents. On cloudy days, the battery may charge only partially, so I shift laundry and dishwashing into daylight hours. That simple habit helps keep evening grid consumption low.
I also watch battery temperature and discharge rate, although the automatic settings have been reliable and required little daily attention so far. I am happiest with the quieter routine: solar panels make power, the battery stores it, and our home uses it when rates are highest. It is not magic, but the monthly savings and dependable backup have made the investment worthwhile for us.
