lifepo batteries

I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive grid electricity after sunset. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but our family cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and charged phones when the utility rate was highest. The difference became obvious during the first full month.

On sunny days, the battery usually reached 100 percent by midafternoon. Instead of exporting all that extra solar for a small credit, it stored the energy and carried us through the evening. I set the battery to discharge during our peak-rate window, from 4 to 9 p.m. Most nights, it supplied the oven, lights, refrigerator, and television without pulling much from the grid. Our electric bill dropped from about $210 to $92, even though our usage was nearly the same. That saving matters more to me than impressive app charts.

I chose lifepo batteries because I wanted a long cycle life and a chemistry I felt comfortable keeping in the garage. The installation was less disruptive than expected, although the electrician needed most of a day to add the inverter, backup panel, and monitoring equipment. The system is not silent; there is a gentle fan noise when it is working hard, but I rarely notice it from inside the house.

The one hiccup happened during a cloudy weekend. The battery hit its reserve setting earlier than expected, and the house switched to grid power for a few hours. I lowered the backup reserve from 30 to 20 percent, and the next week worked better. I still keep that reserve for outages, so I am not chasing every possible dollar.

After several months, my favorite feature is simple: solar power I used to waste now runs my home at night. The battery has made our energy bills far more predictable.
