Recently, I added a growatt smart meter 3 phase LiFePO4 Battery system to my home solar setup, mainly to stop sending so much cheap daytime electricity back to the grid. I wanted to use more of my own solar power after sunset, especially during the expensive evening peak.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The battery went in beside my inverter in the garage, and the installer connected the smart meter to monitor power flowing in and out of the house. I spent the first few days watching the app far too often, but it helped me understand our pattern. The battery charged from the solar panels between late morning and mid-afternoon, then discharged while we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and watched television.
Before the energy storage battery was installed, our evening electricity use was usually around 8–10 kWh. Now, on a reasonably sunny day, the LiFePO4 battery covers most of that. Our monthly bill has dropped by roughly 30–40%, although the exact saving depends heavily on cloudy weather and seasonal heating. I particularly notice the difference on high-tariff days when the battery avoids pulling electricity from the grid at the most expensive time.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first week. The battery stopped discharging earlier than expected, and I initially thought something was wrong. The app showed it had reached its reserve setting, which the installer had set at 20%. Lowering that reserve slightly solved the issue, though I left enough backup capacity for a short outage.
After several months, the biggest practical benefit is not complete energy independence. It is using the solar electricity I already produce instead of buying it back later at a higher rate. The system operates quietly, requires very little attention, and the battery monitoring makes our household energy use much easier to understand. For me, that everyday bill reduction matters more than impressive specifications.
