lithium sailboat batteries

I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery last spring, mainly because my evening electricity rates had become almost as expensive as my daytime usage. My rooftop solar panels produce plenty of power between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., but we are usually cooking, doing laundry, and running the air conditioner after sunset. Before adding battery storage, I sent a lot of cheap solar energy back to the grid and then bought it back at the peak rate.

The installation took most of a day. The electrician mounted the battery beside my inverter, added a backup-loads panel, and connected the monitoring app. The hardest part was not the hardware; it was waiting for the utility approval before the system could operate in its final mode. Once approved, I set the solar battery to charge during the day and discharge from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

That schedule made the biggest practical difference. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 95–100% by late afternoon. It then covers our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and much of the kitchen load through the expensive evening window. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly $70–$90, although the savings are smaller during cloudy winter weeks. I still have a connection fee and occasional grid usage, so the bill is not zero, but the improvement is obvious.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging after a firmware update, even though the app showed plenty of charge. I power-cycled the inverter and contacted support; they pushed another update, and normal operation returned the next morning.

I have seen products marketed with phrases like “lithium sailboat batteries,” but for my home I cared more about safe indoor installation, usable capacity, and dependable solar battery software. So far, the system has been quiet, predictable, and far more useful than I expected during peak-rate hours.
