Running our home on solar power felt satisfying, but watching electricity rates climb after sunset made me realize our panels were not doing enough. I installed a 10kWh lithium battery alongside a growatt 5000mtls inverter last spring, mainly to cover evening use rather than chase total energy independence.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. An electrician mounted the inverter in the utility room, added a battery disconnect, and programmed the system to charge from solar during the day. I asked for a backup reserve of 25%, so the battery would not be completely drained if a storm caused an outage. After two days of checking the monitoring app, I stopped hovering over it.
The biggest practical difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Previously, my air conditioner, induction cooktop, refrigerator, and lights pulled expensive grid electricity during those hours. Now the battery supplies most of that load automatically. My daily utility cost has fallen from roughly $7–$9 in summer to about $3–$4, depending on air conditioning. That is not a fantasy “zero bill” result, but it is around $120 saved per month.
One troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve earlier than expected, and the app showed grid import even though the panels were producing. I found the charge schedule had switched to a narrow window after a software update. I widened it to our daylight period, restarted the inverter, and everything returned to normal.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I do not move switches or think about battery cycles. The solar storage system simply charges when sunlight is available and discharges when rates are high. I keep the grid connection for reliability, but peak-hour savings and backup power have made the investment feel practical rather than futuristic.
