Running my home on stored solar power has changed the way I think about electricity bills.
Before installing a battery, I sent excess daytime solar back to the grid, then bought expensive power in the evening. My main goal was peak-hour savings, not energy independence.
I chose a 51.2V lithium iron phosphate battery with a growatt single phase smart meter 51.2V Battery setup. The installation was straightforward. The installer mounted the inverter and battery in my utility room, added the smart meter, checked the CT clamp, and connected the monitoring app. By late afternoon, I could see battery state of charge and household demand on my phone.
During sunny hours, the battery charged to 100 percent, then discharged after dinner when solar production fell. I set a reserve at 20%, so it would not run flat during an outage. That buffer proved useful when our neighborhood had a short evening blackout. The lights stayed on and the Wi-Fi router never dropped, although I avoided running the oven.
On the bill, the difference became obvious after the first full month. My evening grid consumption fell sharply, and my bill was about 35% lower than the same month last year, despite similar weather and usage. I am saving roughly $45–$60 monthly. In winter, savings are smaller because cloudy days leave less energy to store, but the battery still covers the expensive 4–9 p.m. window most days.
The only troubleshooting moment was a misleading low battery warning in the app. It appeared after I changed the reserve setting, but the battery itself was fine. The installer explained that the display needed a complete charge cycle to recalculate. After one sunny day, the warning disappeared, and bills fell again.
