Running my home on stored solar power has changed the way I think about electricity bills. During sunny days, my rooftop panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon. I set it to discharge from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., when our utility rate is highest. This simple schedule has made the biggest difference for me to my monthly bill. Before storage, my family cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and used the heat pump at exactly the worst time for electricity pricing. Now the battery handles most of that load. My bill fell by roughly 30%, from about $180 to $125 in a typical month, although winter savings are smaller because there is less sunlight.

The best part is noticing the battery working without babysitting. The app shows state of charge, solar production, and household consumption in real time.

I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped sending data to the app, though the lights stayed on and the battery continued charging. I power-cycled the Wi-Fi dongle, waited five minutes, and reconnected it. The readings returned that evening. It was reassuring that monitoring failed before the actual solar battery system did.

My setup includes a growatt off grid solar inverter 24v, paired with lithium iron phosphate storage and rooftop solar panels. I am not completely off grid, but the inverter gives me backup power during short outages. I especially appreciate keeping the refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, and a few lights running without dragging out a gas generator.
