2,400-watt solar panels now cover most of my daytime electricity, but the real change came after I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery storage system.
Before the battery, my house exported cheap midday solar and pulled expensive power from the grid after dinner. I noticed it most when cooking, running the heat pump, and charging our two phones and laptop around 6 p.m. Since installing the solar battery, the inverter stores excess production during the afternoon and discharges it through the evening peak. My utility’s peak rate is nearly three times the overnight rate, so this simple shift has made a noticeable difference.
My monthly bill used to average about $180 during the hotter months. It now sits between $70 and $95, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. The battery does not eliminate the bill, but saving roughly $80 to $100 each month feels very real. I also like seeing the battery monitor show our home running from stored solar instead of buying electricity at the worst time of day.
Setup was easier than I expected, although I spent an afternoon labeling cables and checking settings. I use a separate 12.8v lifepo4 battery charger for a small backup battery bank in my shed, not for the main high-voltage home battery. That charger has been reliable, and I keep it set up for occasional maintenance charging.
The one minor issue happened during a cloudy week when the battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected. I initially thought something was wrong, but the monitoring app showed reduced solar input and a conservative backup setting. Lowering the reserve slightly solved it.
After several months, my favorite feature is not the headline capacity; it is the quiet, automatic peak-hour savings. I barely think about the system now, except when I check the app and realize the house has made it through dinner using yesterday’s sunshine.
