Since installing my solar battery last spring, I have stopped thinking of electricity as something I simply buy whenever the house needs it. Our 10 kWh home energy storage system is paired with an ls inverter, and the main reason I chose it was to use more of my rooftop solar after sunset. Before, the panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but our cooking, laundry, and television happened when the sun was gone. Now battery charging starts automatically once the solar panels cover the daytime loads. By dinner, I usually have a useful reserve instead of sending every extra kilowatt-hour back to the grid.

The biggest change is during peak hours. My utility’s expensive period runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when our oven, heat pump, and kettle get the most use. I set the battery to discharge in that window, and the difference is visible on the monthly bill. Last summer, before the battery, our average bill was about $165. After installation, with similar weather and habits, it fell to roughly $92. That is not a perfect apples-to-apples experiment, but saving around $70 a month in the high-use season feels very real. I also notice fewer sudden jumps on cloudy days because the battery smooths out short gaps in solar production.

My one annoying moment came during a firmware update. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100 percent, but the house was still drawing from the grid after sunset. I checked the settings and found the backup reserve had somehow been raised to 100 percent, so the system was protecting the entire charge instead of using it. Lowering the reserve to 20 percent fixed the problem immediately. I appreciated that the explanation was simple, although I now glance at the app whenever the battery behaves differently lately.
