8Months ago, I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar setup, mostly to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. My panels already covered much of the daytime usage, but our household always seemed to run the oven, dishwasher, and heat pump after sunset. That was when the utility’s peak rates hurt most.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The battery went in beside my inverter, and the installer configured it to charge from solar during the day and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. I also bought a 48v 50a lifepo4 battery charger for backup charging and maintenance. I have only used it once, after several cloudy days, but it worked without any fuss.
The biggest practical change is watching the energy monitor at dinner time. Before the battery, I would see grid consumption jump as soon as the sun disappeared. Now the battery supplies the house, and the grid meter often stays nearly flat until the battery reaches its reserve setting. I keep a 20 percent backup reserve, so there is still power available if we lose the grid overnight.
My monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35 to 45 percent, depending on weather and how much we use the heat pump. It is not complete energy independence, but the reduction is very noticeable. During one particularly sunny month, I exported less solar power and used far more of my own generation after dark.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment: the battery stopped discharging because the inverter’s time-of-use schedule had reset after a firmware update. The battery was fine; I simply re-entered the schedule in the app. Since then, I check the battery state of charge every few days. After months of use, the quiet operation, predictable peak-hour savings, and simple solar battery monitoring have made the system feel worthwhile rather than complicated.
