0n most mornings, I check my solar app before coffee. Last summer, I added a 10kwh powerwall battery to our rooftop solar system because our utility charges nearly twice as much for evening electricity. Installation took one day. The crew mounted the battery in the garage, ran conduit to the inverter, and explained settings without drowning me in jargon.
The biggest difference has been after-work hours. Before storage, I came home at six, turned on the oven, heated the house, and watched the meter pull expensive grid power. Now the battery usually reaches full charge by early afternoon, then carries us through dinner and most of the evening. My peak-hour usage dropped from roughly 12 kilowatt-hours a day to around 4, according to the utility portal. That cut my monthly bill by about $45, though winter savings are smaller on cloudy days.
I did have one minor scare during the first month. The battery stopped discharging one evening, although the app showed stored energy. I checked the breaker, restarted the monitoring gateway, and waited. Nothing changed. A support technician spotted that backup reserve had accidentally been set to 100 percent after a firmware update. That meant the system was protecting every kilowatt-hour for an outage. Lowering the reserve to 25 percent fixed it immediately. I appreciated the emergency cushion, but the setting was not obvious.
Since then, I have left the reserve at 25 percent. During a brief outage in October, the lights stayed on and the refrigerator never blinked, making the purchase feel worthwhile beyond bill savings. I still use grid power on rainy stretches, so I would not call our home energy independent. The solar battery has made consumption calmer and predictable. Watching the evening meter barely move is satisfying. Our 10kwh powerwall quietly shifts when we buy electricity.
