I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. It was not a dramatic project, but watching the solar inverter switch from charging to powering the house after sunset has been surprisingly satisfying. Before the battery, my solar panels exported much of their afternoon production, then I paid peak rates for cooking dinner and running the heat pump.
The biggest practical improvement is my evening bill. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100% by about 2:30 p.m. It carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and usually the dishwasher through the expensive 4–9 p.m. period. My utility statement used to show roughly $4 to $6 a day in peak charges during summer; now that portion is commonly under $1. Monthly savings have landed around $70 to $95, depending on weather and how often I use the oven. That is more noticeable than the marketing estimates I saw.
I did have one small scare during the first cold week. The battery stopped discharging at 18%, leaving the house on grid power overnight. I initially thought the battery was faulty, but the monitoring app showed the lifepo4 low voltage cutoff had been triggered because my low temperature setting was too conservative. After raising the cutoff slightly, improving ventilation around the battery cabinet, and updating the inverter firmware, it returned to normal operation. I still keep that protection in place; I would rather buy a little grid power than deeply discharge an expensive lithium battery.
What I appreciate most is how boring the system has become. I check the state of charge every morning and otherwise leave it alone. Cloudy stretches may cover only dinner and a few lights, but battery storage cuts peak rates and keeps our household calmer during outages.
