Running our home on solar storage changed my evenings more than I expected. Before installing growatt batteries, I used to watch the electricity meter climb after sunset, especially when cooking dinner and running the heat pump. Now the battery stores cheap midday solar power and carries us through the expensive hours.
The biggest difference shows up between five and nine p.m. Our utility has time-of-use pricing, so those hours used to be the painful part of the bill. I set the inverter to prioritize self-consumption first, then discharge the battery during peak pricing. On a normal sunny day, the battery reaches full charge by early afternoon. By bedtime, the state of charge is usually around thirty to forty percent, rather than empty. That small reserve also feels reassuring when the weather forecast looks uncertain.
My monthly bill fell noticeably, not magically to zero, but roughly thirty to forty percent compared with the same season last year. The exact savings vary because cloudy weeks still force some grid charging. Even so, the battery has reduced our peak-hour consumption almost every day. I particularly notice it on laundry evenings, when I can run the washer without feeling like I am deliberately buying expensive electricity.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first month. After a firmware update, the monitoring app showed the battery at one percent even though the inverter reported solar production. I did not panic; I checked the cable connections, restarted the gateway, and waited through one full charge cycle. The reading corrected itself the next morning. Since then I have kept automatic updates enabled but glance at the app every few days. That simple habit caught a later Wi-Fi dropout before I blamed the hardware.
Overall, the system feels practical and worthwhile for us.
