2 months ago, I added a 12v 100ah battery deep cycle bank to my modest small rooftop solar setup, and the difference during peak hours has been surprisingly practical. I was tired of sending excess afternoon generation back to the grid for a modest credit, then buying electricity after sunset at the highest rate. The battery now charges from roughly 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., when my panels are producing well. My inverter switches to stored energy around 4 p.m., and it carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, lights, and sometimes the washing machine through the evening. On sunny days, my grid usage after dinner is almost zero. That has lowered my monthly bill by about $35 to $50, depending on weather and how much cooking we do. It is not a dramatic whole-home backup, but avoiding those expensive peak-rate hours makes the battery storage worthwhile for me.

The one hiccup came during the first week. The battery monitor showed a full charge, yet the inverter stopped discharging at 62%. I initially suspected a faulty lithium battery, but the manual pointed to an incorrect low-voltage cutoff setting. I changed the setting cautiously, restarted the system, and watched it for two evenings before trusting it. Since then, the state of charge has tracked normally, and I have not needed another reset.

I keep the battery in a ventilated utility room, with fuses and cable connections easy to inspect. I also check the solar charge controller once a week rather than relying blindly on the app. The app is useful for seeing solar production and battery capacity, but it occasionally reports stale data until I refresh it.

Shifting solar power into peak periods is the clearest benefit, and backup during short outages is a welcome practical bonus for us.
