Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a lifepo4 80ah battery beside my existing solar inverter last spring, mainly to stop sending cheap daytime electricity back to the grid and buying it back during peak hours. The setup was less intimidating than I expected. I mounted the battery on a small wall bracket, ran the communication cable to the inverter, and changed the charging schedule in the app. My electrician checked the isolator, battery cables, and firmware before turning everything on.
That final check mattered because the first evening exposed a simple setting mistake: the inverter was still in its default backup-only mode. It had plenty of charge, but it refused to discharge when grid prices rose. After switching to self-consumption mode, the system behaved exactly as I hoped.
On a sunny day, the panels fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Around 5 p.m., the battery takes over the fridge, router, lights, and heat-pump controls. I usually watch its state of charge fall from about 95% to 45% before midnight, rather than pulling those kilowatt-hours from the grid.
That change cut my evening usage noticeably. My electricity bill dropped by roughly 30 to 40 dollars a month, depending on weather and how often we use the oven. I am not pretending the battery eliminates bills; winter clouds still force some grid charging, and the fixed connection fee remains. The practical win is shifting consumption away from expensive peak periods without changing our routine.
I appreciate the lithium iron phosphate chemistry. The battery feels quieter and cooler than I expected, and I have not noticed any capacity loss after several months. I keep the reserve at 20% for outages, although I have only tested backup power twice.
The best feature is not flashy technology; it is waking up and seeing solar energy carried yesterday into today’s hours.
