Running my home battery for six months has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my garage and connected it to a growatt 8kw inverter. The installation took most of a day, mainly because the electrician had to reroute conduit and update the monitoring app. I had expected a quick wall mount, but the final wiring was tidy and the system started charging from my rooftop solar before dinner.
The biggest difference appears between 4pm and 9pm, when my utility rates are highest. Before storage, I would come home, run the induction cooktop, heat the water, and watch television while drawing expensive grid power. Now the battery carries those loads automatically. On sunny days, it reaches 100 percent by early afternoon, then discharges steadily through the evening. My monthly bill has fallen from roughly $180 to $95, although winter clouds and higher heating use still push it upward. The savings are not dramatic every month, but the peak-period reduction is easy to notice on my bill.
A small troubleshooting moment made the setup feel more real. One evening, the app showed the battery at 72%, yet the house was pulling from the grid. I checked the inverter and found an error light caused by a loose communications cable. Reseating it restored normal operation within minutes. Since then, I have also enabled a reserve setting, keeping 20% capacity for outages rather than chasing every last kilowatt-hour. That feels worthwhile because our neighborhood gets short summer outages.
What I appreciate is the quiet, automatic behavior. I do not manually switch appliances or monitor the battery constantly; I just check the solar production and state of charge once or twice a week. The battery has made solar power useful after sunset, not just during daylight.
