I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, and the biggest difference showed up after dinner. Before the solar battery, my panels sent excess power back to the grid during the day, then I bought electricity again between 5:00 and 9:00. That expensive window was eating into the savings I expected from solar.
With the battery set to self-consumption mode, it charges from midday solar and carries us through the evening. On a typical sunny day, we now use roughly 6–8 kWh from stored energy after sunset. My utility bill has fallen by about $65–$85 a month, depending on weather and how much laundry I run. It is not a dramatic overnight transformation, but over twelve months the battery should save close to $900, which makes the installation feel sensible.
The most useful feature is the reserve setting. I keep 25% in reserve for outages rather than squeezing out every last kilowatt-hour. We had one brief outage during a storm, and the transfer was automatic. The lights flickered once, my router stayed on, and the refrigerator never stopped. That small test gave me more confidence than any specification sheet.
I spent time comparing lifepo4 vs li ion before buying. Lithium iron phosphate seemed better suited to a garage installation: safer chemistry, longer cycle life, and no noticeable performance drop during normal use. The app is basic but helpful; I can check battery state of charge, solar production, and grid imports from my phone.
My only annoyance has been winter. Cloudy days leave less energy to store, so I still pull from the grid during peak hours. Even so, the system has changed how I think about household electricity. I no longer watch sunny afternoons and wonder where that solar power went; it is waiting for me when I need it most.
