I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly because my evening electricity bills were getting ridiculous. My rooftop solar system produced plenty during the day, but our family used most of it after dinner, when the utility rate jumped to the peak-hour price.

The electrician mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, added a new energy meter, and connected the system to its monitoring app in one afternoon. I chose a lithium iron phosphate unit using lifepo battery cells, partly for the expected cycle life and partly because I felt more comfortable with its thermal stability in an enclosed garage.

The first week was satisfying. By late afternoon, the battery reached 100% from solar generation. At 5 p.m., it began supplying the house automatically, covering the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and our induction cooktop. We do not run the dryer from the battery, but it comfortably handles our evening load. Before storage, my summer bill averaged around $185. After adding the battery, it fell to roughly $95, despite similar air-conditioning use. That is about $90 saved each month, although I know the exact result depends on weather and utility rates.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. I checked the inverter, found its communications cable had loosened slightly, and reseated it. Since then, I check the battery dashboard once a week rather than obsessing over it daily.

What I appreciate most is the quiet routine: solar charges the battery, the battery carries the expensive evening hours, and the grid becomes a backup instead of my default source. I still watch my consumption, but I no longer feel punished for cooking dinner after sunset.
