Replacing my old grid-tied setup with a battery storage system has made the biggest difference to our evening electricity use. I run a growatt 5000tl3s inverter with a 10 kWh lithium battery, and the main benefit is simple: most of the power we use after sunset now comes from energy collected on the roof during the day.
Before installing the battery, our solar panels exported plenty of electricity around lunchtime, when we were out at work. Then we bought power back from the grid between 5pm and 9pm, when the rates were highest. Now the battery charges from surplus solar, usually reaching 90–100% by mid-afternoon. It discharges through dinner, while the washing machine, refrigerator, lights, and television are running. On a typical summer day, that has reduced our peak-hour consumption by roughly 7–9 kWh.
Our monthly bill used to sit around $180–$220 during the warmer months. Since adding the battery, it is generally between $70 and $100, depending on cloudy weather and air-conditioning use. The savings are not magical—winter is still expensive—but seeing far fewer imported kilowatt-hours on the bill has been genuinely satisfying.
The one minor issue came during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at about 35%, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially thought the battery management system was faulty. After checking the settings, I found the minimum state-of-charge reserve had been set too high during commissioning. Lowering that reserve to 15% fixed it, while still leaving sensible backup capacity.
I also appreciate having backup power during short outages. It does not run every heavy appliance, but it keeps the internet, lights, refrigerator, and a few outlets working. For me, the best part is not watching the app—it is using our own solar energy at night instead of buying expensive electricity when demand is highest.
