I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring after watching my milwaukee electric bills climb whenever the utility switched to peak pricing. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but I was still buying expensive electricity between 4 and 9 p.m. The battery seemed like the missing piece, especially because our family cooks dinner, runs the dishwasher, and charges phones after sunset.

The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, added a backup-loads panel, and finished in one day. I spent the evening in the monitoring app checking solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption. The settings took a little experimenting: I chose self-consumption mode, kept a 20 percent reserve for outages, and allowed charging from the grid only during the cheapest overnight hours.

The biggest difference showed up on the bill. Before storage, my summer bills averaged around $180, even with plenty of sunny days. After the battery began carrying our evening load, the same kind of months landed near $95. It is not a magical zero-dollar bill; fixed charges remain, and cloudy stretches still require grid power. Still, shifting solar energy into peak hours has saved roughly $70 to $90 monthly, which feels much more useful than exporting surplus for a small credit.

One minor troubleshooting moment happened during a firmware update. One morning, the app showed the battery at zero percent even though the reserve was set to 20 percent, and the house pulled from the grid. I checked the display, found the battery was healthy, and restarted the monitoring gateway. The reading corrected itself within ten minutes. Since then, I have learned not to panic over one strange app number. Overall, the battery has made solar power practical after dark, and watching peak usage disappear remains my favorite part.
