Solution Solar Inverter
I installed my solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop exporting cheap midday power and buying it back during expensive evening hours. My setup is modest: 6 kW of rooftop solar, a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery, and a hybrid inverter feeding the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and washing machine.
The biggest change showed up on my billing cycle. Before storage, our evening usage regularly pushed the house into the utility’s peak-rate window. Now the battery charges from solar around noon and discharges from 4 p.m. until bedtime. In summer, my bill dropped from about $185 to $72. It is not magic—the solar production still matters, and cloudy weeks are noticeably worse—but avoiding those peak-hour rates has made the battery payback feel much more believable.
I did spend extra time on the installation details. I built a diy lifepo4 battery box for a backup battery rather than putting loose components on a shelf. I used a fuse, disconnect, insulated busbars, and a temperature sensor, and kept everything away from damp areas. I am comfortable with wiring, but I still had an electrician check the connections and inverter settings. That inspection was money well spent.
My only hiccup came during the hot week. The battery stopped discharging at night even though the app showed plenty of charge. The inverter had entered a temperature-protection mode because the utility closet was warmer than I expected. I added ventilation and moved a storage bin blocking the louver. Since then, the battery has operated quietly and predictably.
I like seeing the energy flow in the monitoring app: sunlight charging the battery, then stored power covering dinner, laundry, and the heat pump. I still keep the grid connected, but solar-plus-storage now handles the expensive hours and gives us outage backup, which is the part I appreciate most.
