Running my home on solar power has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a 10kWh lithium battery alongside my panels and a growatt 3.5 kw inverter last spring. The main reason was simple: my utility charges much more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Instead of sending afternoon generation back to the grid for a small credit, I now store it and use that energy after dinner.
On a sunny day, the battery usually reaches full by about 2:30. By 5, the inverter switches the house over without me touching anything. My refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, washing machine, and evening lights run from stored energy. Before installation, my monthly bill averaged around $180 in summer. It now lands near $95, although weather and rates vary. The biggest saving is not dramatic on one day; it is the repeated peak-hour reduction. Last month, I used only 18kWh from the grid during expensive hours, compared with roughly 110 kWh the previous summer.
I did have a minor troubleshooting moment in January. During a cold, cloudy stretch, my battery stopped charging at 62% and the app showed a vague communication warning. I first assumed the battery was failing, but the system was actually fine: a router update had knocked the inverter offline. I restarted the router, waited five minutes, and power cycling the inverter restored communication. I also learned to check the monitoring app before panicking. Since then, I have kept the inverter and battery on a small UPS, which seems to have prevented another disconnect.
The battery isn't magic. It cannot create energy during several rainy days, and I still watch consumption carefully. But its quiet operation, predictable solar self-consumption, and lower peak usage make it worthwhile for my household. I particularly like checking the dashboard each morning and seeing yesterday's grid use below 1kWh. That small number feels like the real payoff.
