Running my house on solar power has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a growatt 5000tl3 48V Battery bank alongside my rooftop panels last spring.
Before the battery, our electric bill jumped whenever we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and charged two laptops after sunset. The solar inverter sent excess generation away during the afternoon, then we bought it back at the expensive peak rate. After adding lithium battery storage, I set the system to keep a reserve for outages and discharge during those peak hours.
On a typical sunny day, the panels fill the battery by early afternoon. The battery management system usually shows around 90% by 3:30, and I let it carry the house until about 10:30 p.m. We still pull a little grid power on cloudy days, but the difference is obvious. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 last summer to between $70 and $90 this summer, depending on weather. That is the most practical proof for me; I notice the savings every month, not just on an app graph.
The setup was fairly straightforward, although I did hire an electrician to check the battery cables, disconnect, and grounding. The Growatt settings took me an evening to understand. I initially chose the wrong time window, so the battery discharged before our utility peak began. After changing the tariff schedule in the monitoring app, it behaved exactly as intended.
My only real troubleshooting moment came during a cold week. The battery stopped discharging overnight and displayed a low temperature warning. I checked the manual, warmed the utility room slightly, and restarted the inverter. It resumed normally the next evening. I now keep the battery area dry and above freezing.
For me, the best part is quiet, automatic peak-hour savings. I do not constantly babysit the solar battery storage system; I simply check the state of charge once or twice a week and watch the bill.
