2am I used to notice the inverter humming and the grid meter spinning whenever our utility’s peak rate started. Since installing a 10kWh solar battery beside our garage, those expensive evening hours feel much less painful. Our rooftop panels charge the battery through the afternoon, and the energy storage system automatically runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat pump after sunset.
On a normal summer day, we use roughly 7 kWh from stored solar between 4 and 9 p.m. That has cut our monthly bill by about $45 to $70, depending on cloud cover and how often we cook. Before, our evening electricity was the most expensive part of the bill; now we buy far less from the grid when the rate is highest. The thermostat can run, the kids can shower, and I don’t have to think about timing every appliance.
One small hiccup happened during a week of rain. The battery state of charge dropped to 18 percent, and the app showed a “reserve reached” warning. I initially thought something was broken, but the installer explained that the backup reserve was protecting the battery and leaving capacity for an outage. We temporarily lowered that reserve from 30 to 20 percent, and the system made it through the next evening without pulling much peak power.
I also learned that a 12v lithium iron phosphate battery usually suits smaller RV or DIY solar projects, not our whole-home battery bank. That distinction stopped me from ordering the wrong replacement part.
The best part is not watching the app graphs. It’s coming home to a quiet house, knowing the solar battery is using energy we made ourselves instead of selling it back cheaply and buying it again at dinner. The routine now feels automatic, practical, and worth the upfront cost to me.
