I installed a 10 kWh solar battery last spring, mainly to stop sending cheap midday solar power back to the grid and buying it again during expensive evening hours. My setup is a 6.6 kW rooftop array, a hybrid inverter, and a sine wave inverter feeding the house circuits. I had an electrician handle the wiring, but I watched the commissioning closely because I wanted to understand what the battery was actually doing, not just trust an app.

The biggest change is between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before storage, our cooking, heat pump, lights, and dishwasher all landed in the utility’s peak period. Now the battery charges from solar through the afternoon and discharges automatically after dinner. On a typical clear day, it supplies roughly 6 to 8 kWh in that window. My evening grid consumption has fallen from around 9 kWh to 2 or 3 kWh, and our monthly bill dropped by about $70 in summer. It is not a magic zero bill: cloudy weeks still require grid electricity, and the battery reserves 20 percent charge, which I leave untouched for outages.

The only irritating moment came during the first hot week. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100 percent, but it stopped powering the house at sunset. I checked the obvious things—critical-load settings, time-of-use schedule, and Wi-Fi—before calling the installer. The problem was a firmware update that had reset the discharge schedule to “backup only.” Once that was corrected, the battery behaved normally. I now glance at the state-of-charge graph every few days, especially after software updates, rather than discovering a problem when the evening rate starts.

For me, the value is predictable peak-hour savings and quieter energy use: I can see exactly where my solar goes and rely less on the grid each night. That feels more useful than chasing a perfect payback on paper.
