Solution Solar Battery
Running my solar battery system for the past eight months has changed how I think about electricity. I installed a 10 kWh home energy storage battery alongside my rooftop panels, mainly because our utility’s peak-hour rates had become painfully expensive. The inverter is a growatt 10 kw model, and my goal was simple: use more of my own solar power after sunset instead of buying it from the grid.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge by early afternoon. I then set it to discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our electricity price is highest. That timing has made the biggest difference to my bills. Before adding storage, our summer bills were often around $190. They now average closer to $115, even though we run the air conditioner most evenings. The exact savings vary with weather, but avoiding those peak-rate hours is clearly doing the heavy lifting.
The battery also keeps our essential loads running during short outages. It powers the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a few outlets, although I learned quickly that the backup circuit does not cover the entire house. During one evening outage, I tried running the microwave and portable heater together. The system shut those loads off temporarily, which was a useful reminder that battery capacity and inverter output are not the same thing. After separating the high-draw appliances, everything worked normally.
I check the solar monitoring app most mornings, mostly to see how much energy we generated and whether the battery charged overnight from the grid. The app is not perfect—it occasionally takes a few minutes to update—but it gives me enough information to adjust our usage.
For me, the best part of solar battery storage is not total energy independence. It is predictable peak-hour savings and a little more security when the grid goes down. That practical improvement has made the investment feel worthwhile.
