Using my solar battery after sunset has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to avoid buying power during the expensive evening window. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: the installer mounted the battery, connected the CT clamp, and configured the multiplus inverter to prioritize my daytime solar production.

The first week was the convincing part. On sunny days, my panels filled the battery by mid-afternoon, and the system carried the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater through dinner. Before storage, those hours were when my grid meter spun fastest. Now the battery discharges until about 11 p.m., then I let the grid take over overnight.

My utility bill dropped from roughly $185 to $112 in the first comparable month, despite similar weather and usage. That is not a miracle saving, but it feels meaningful because the reduction comes from peak-hour shifting rather than simply using less electricity. I also noticed the battery makes solar power feel more useful; I no longer watch surplus energy disappear into the grid for a small credit while I later buy expensive power back.

I am still learning how weather, reserve settings, and household habits affect savings. On cloudy days, I sometimes raise the backup reserve because I do not want the battery completely empty before morning. On sunny days, I lower it and let the system work harder during dinner and evening hours.

I am not pretending this eliminates my utility bill, but it has made household energy costs noticeably easier to predict. After several months, the battery has been quiet, predictable, and genuinely helpful. For me, the best feature is not total energy independence; it is waking up to a lower bill while using the solar energy I already produced.
