I installed lithium solar batteries last autumn, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during our expensive evening hours. My solar panels already covered most daytime use, but the old arrangement sent an amount back to the grid for a credit, then pulled power back at dinner when rates were highest.
The difference showed up almost immediately. On a sunny day, the battery charges from surplus solar by early afternoon. Around 4 p.m., it switches to discharge, running the refrigerator, heat pump, lights, and the induction cooker. I watch the energy monitor occasionally, but otherwise it just works. Our average evening consumption is roughly 8 kWh, and the 10 kWh home battery usually carries us through until midnight. After that, the grid takes over at the cheaper overnight rate.
Before storage, our monthly bill averaged about $145 in winter and $95 in summer. This winter, with similar weather, it has been closer to $105. That is not a miracle saving, and I am still paying a connection charge, but the peak-hour reduction is noticeable. I estimate the battery saves around $35 to $45 monthly, depending on sunshine and heating use.
I did have one minor scare during the first week. The battery stopped discharging and showed a warning in the app. I power-cycled the inverter, checked that the battery isolator was on, and waited ten minutes. The warning cleared, and the installer later said a firmware update had interrupted communication between the inverter and battery management system. Since then, the system has been boring in the best possible way.
My practical lesson is to size storage around evening usage, not panel capacity. My solar battery does not make us independent, but it makes our solar power more useful, and I expect the reduced peak electricity purchases to pay back the installation.
