Solution Solar Battery
Over the past six months, my home battery has changed the way I use solar more than I expected. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery alongside my rooftop solar system, mainly to avoid buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. Before the battery, my panels would produce plenty of power at lunchtime, then I would pull electricity from the grid after dinner when rates were highest.
Now, the battery usually reaches about 95% state of charge by mid-afternoon. Once my solar panels stop producing much, the inverter switches the house over to battery power. It runs our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the washing machine without any noticeable difference. I set the reserve at 20%, so there is still some backup capacity if the grid fails.
The most satisfying part is checking my utility bill. My evening usage used to cost roughly $80 to $100 a month during the warmer months. Since adding storage, that portion has dropped to around $25 to $35, depending on air-conditioning use. My total bill is not zero, because I still pay connection charges and occasionally buy power on cloudy days, but the reduction is very real.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. For several days, the battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I eventually found that a time-of-use schedule had reset after a firmware update. I rebuilt the schedule, restarted the battery inverter, and normal operation returned. It was frustrating, but not a hardware failure.
I also compared a few battery brands before buying, including systems marketed with “fortune cells.” What mattered more to me was usable capacity, warranty support, monitoring software, and a local installer who would answer the phone. So far, this solar battery has been a practical investment: less peak-hour grid usage, steadier energy costs, and much better use of the solar power I already generate.
