Early last summer, I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery in my garage, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during our evening peak hours.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the hybrid inverter and connected it to my existing rooftop panels. On the first afternoon, the app showed solar charging at about 4.5kW, then automatically switched the house over to battery after sunset. I did not need to change any habits, although I now run the dishwasher and washing machine before the battery gets low.
Before storage, my utility bill averaged around $180 a month in the warmer season. After adding battery storage, it fell to roughly $105, with the biggest difference coming from peak-hour usage. My inverter pulls from the grid only when the battery reaches its reserve, set at 20%. On sunny days, that reserve is usually still full by breakfast because the panels refill it quickly.
The one hiccup happened in December, when a cloudy afternoon left the battery at 18% and the system shut down earlier than I expected. I initially blamed the solar panels, but the monitoring app showed the inverter had entered a low-temperature protection mode. I warmed the garage slightly, reset the inverter, and raised the reserve to 25%. Since then, it has been uneventful, even while powering our refrigerator, router, lights, and a small desiel pump 12v.
What I appreciate most is not total independence from the grid; it is the predictability. I can see the battery state of charge, solar production, and evening consumption from my phone, and I know the expensive hours are being covered quietly. The payback will take years, but the lower bills and backup power already make the investment feel worthwhile. It suits our household well.
