Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a lifepo4 12v 280ah akku battery in my garage last spring. The setup was simpler than I expected: a wall-mounted inverter, battery cables, fuses, and a small monitoring screen. My main goal was to store midday solar power and use it during expensive evening hours.
Before adding storage, my panels often exported power at six cents per kilowatt-hour, then I bought electricity back at roughly thirty cents. That difference made the battery worthwhile even though installation wasn't cheap.
On sunny days, I now charge to about ninety percent by midafternoon. When evening cooking starts, the battery supplies the oven, lights, refrigerator, and heat-pump load before grid power returns. This has been the biggest practical change: I no longer watch the utility meter climb during dinner.
My monthly bill dropped by about 35%, from an average of $180 to around $117 over the first three months. Results vary with cloudy weather and how much laundry we run, but peak-hour consumption is noticeably lower.
I also appreciate the battery's quiet operation. It makes a faint click when the inverter changes modes, but there is no fan roar in the living area.
My one troubleshooting moment came after a storm. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100%, yet the house was pulling from the grid. I found the inverter had tripped its input breaker. After switching it off, waiting a minute, then resetting it, charging resumed normally. I added a note to check that breaker after severe weather, although it has not happened again.
For anyone considering a home solar battery, my advice is to size storage around your evening load, not your entire daily usage. My 280Ah lithium battery usually carries the refrigerator, lights, and networking gear until morning. It reliably covers my basic overnight loads without noticeable drama.
