Solution Solar Battery
Very soon after our rooftop solar panels went in, I realized their biggest weakness: most production happened while everyone was at work. Adding a home battery finally made that daytime energy useful after sunset. I chose a 280Ah LiFePO4 battery with an inverter and did the installation in our utility room, with an electrician checking the final connections.
The battery uses an eve 280ah lifepo4 a grade cell, and I mention that because the seller was clear about the cell grade and test documents. Setup was less intimidating than expected. I set the inverter to charge from solar first, then discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when our utility charges peak rates. On sunny days, the battery is usually full by early afternoon.
Before storage, our evening bill was painful: cooking, laundry, and the heat pump all ran after sunset. Now battery covers most of that window. Across three recent bills, peak-hour consumption fell from roughly 11 kWh per day to 3 or 4. That saves about $42 to $58 monthly, depending on weather and guests. It is not a zero bill, but comparing the same months year to year makes the difference obvious.
A mildly annoying moment came during a rainy week. The battery stopped discharging at 30 percent state of charge, although the app showed demand in the house. I blamed the solar battery, but the inverter log showed low-temperature protection. Our utility room had dropped to 7 degrees Celsius overnight. I moved the sensor away from a draft, restarted the system, and it worked normally the next afternoon. Now I keep the room warmer and check the monitoring app weekly.
Battery storage works when settings match my tariff and routine. I prefer a modest system that shifts evening loads. Solar energy remains useful after sunset.
