I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. The setup was less intimidating than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to my hybrid inverter, and configured it to charge from rooftop solar first. I kept the existing panels, so there was no major rewiring inside the house.
The biggest difference showed up after 4 p.m. During sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100% before dinner. It then runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and my heat-pump water heater through the evening. Before storage, those hours were exactly when our utility rates jumped. My first full month with the battery cut my electricity bill from $186 to $91. The following month was cloudy, but it still landed at $118, which felt worthwhile without changing our routine. I like watching the energy monitor switch from solar generation to battery discharge instead of seeing the meter pull power from the utility.
One small troubleshooting moment happened in July. The battery stopped discharging at 62% overnight, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially worried something was wrong with the battery management system. After checking the inverter dashboard, I found that backup reserve had accidentally been raised to 60% during a firmware update. I lowered the reserve to 20%, restarted the system, and normal discharge returned that night. That taught me to check settings before blaming hardware.
