eg4 inverter

Getting home battery storage installed last spring changed the way I think about electricity. Before that, my rooftop solar system produced plenty during the day, but I still bought expensive overnight power after dinner, when the oven, heat pump, and water heater were running.

I paired a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with an eg4 inverter, and the difference showed up on the first full billing cycle. I set the battery to charge from solar until late afternoon, then discharge during our utility's peak window. On sunny days, it usually carries us from about 4:30 p.m. until bedtime. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $95, even though our household routine has not changed much. That is about $85 saved, which feels far more real than the estimates I saw online.

The best part is watching the battery percentage instead of the utility meter. When the inverter shows solar production falling, I know we have stored energy ready.

I did have one minor troubleshooting scare in July. The battery stopped discharging at 62%, and the inverter displayed a warning I did not recognize. After checking the battery cables and restarting the monitoring app, I found the charge schedule had accidentally switched to “solar only” during a firmware update. Restoring the time settings fixed it immediately.

Since then, I check the state of charge every few days, keep the battery room cool, and leave some reserve capacity for outages. I am considering adding a second battery before winter, but I want another season of real usage first. For now, this setup has given me lower peak rates, quieter nights, and much more control over my solar energy.
