I installed a 10 kWh home battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak period. My system uses a 48V LiFePO4 battery built with a lifepo4 cell 280ah pack, and it has changed the way I use our solar power more than I expected.
Before the battery, our rooftop panels generated plenty at midday, but most of that energy went straight back to the grid. At around 5 p.m., the dishwasher, induction cooker, heat pump, and lights all started drawing power when solar production was fading. Now the battery charges through the afternoon and carries us through dinner and bedtime. I set it to reserve 20 percent for backup, so I still have some protection if the grid fails.
The practical saving is easiest to see on my utility bill. Before installation, our monthly bill averaged about $180 in summer. It now sits near $75, despite running the heat pump more often. That is roughly $100 saved each month, though I know rates and weather vary. The biggest difference is avoiding peak-hour imports, not producing more solar. On sunny days, I can watch the inverter app show the battery discharging while the meter barely moves.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. During the first week, the battery stopped charging at 86 percent. I checked the cables, restarted the monitoring gateway, and discovered the charge limit had been set too low in the battery management system. Raising the limit fixed it immediately.
Since then, the solar storage system has been boring in the best possible way. I do not hear it from the living room, and the app gives me enough information without constant checking. My only habit is glancing at the state of charge before a cloudy evening and shifting laundry if necessary.
