After six months with a rooftop solar system, I finally added a 48V lithium battery bank last winter. I chose a setup built around a daly 4s 300a BMS because I wanted something practical rather than another app full of confusing graphs. The difference showed up most clearly between 4:00pm and 9:00pm, when my utility charges are highest.
On sunny days, my panels fill the battery by late afternoon. I set the inverter to run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump circulation overnight. Before storage, my evening consumption averaged about 7 kWh from the grid during that window. Now it is usually under 1 kWh, sometimes zero. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $105 over the first full month, despite using the same appliances. That is not a dramatic promise from a brochure; it is simply the result of shifting energy instead of buying it at peak rates.
The best part is that I do not have to think about it every evening. The battery controller handles charge and discharge automatically, and I check the state of charge from my phone only when I am curious. On cloudy stretches, the system still saves money, although I leave a reserve of 25% for outages. That reserve proved useful during a short winter power cut: the lights stayed on and the router never rebooted. I did notice the inverter fan becoming audible when the battery was charging hard, but it is quieter than my old portable generator.
My only troubleshooting moment came after a firmware update. The battery stopped accepting solar for one afternoon, and the app showed a vague communication warning. I powered down the inverter, checked the BMS cable plugs, and restarted everything. The fault disappeared in ten minutes. Since then, the solar battery has worked reliably.
