Every evening after dinner, I check the battery app before switching on anything else. My home has a 9.6 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery paired with a deye sun 10k g inverter, and that habit has changed how I use electricity.
Before installation, my bill jumped whenever the utility moved into peak pricing after 4 p.m. Solar panels covered much of the daytime demand, but I was still importing power while cooking, running the heat pump, and charging our car. Now the battery charges from excess solar around noon and discharges during those expensive hours. On a summer weekday, the app shows 7 to 9 kWh less grid consumption between 4 and 9 p.m. That has reduced my monthly bill by roughly $45 to $70, depending on weather and how often we charge the car at home.
The biggest surprise was how quiet the system is. I expected a hum, but the inverter sits in the garage and I rarely hear it. The battery reserve is set at 20 percent, so there is still backup power if the neighborhood loses electricity. I tested that once by turning off the breaker. The lights stayed on, Wi-Fi kept working, and the refrigerator never stopped. I did not run the oven or air conditioner, though, so I would not call it whole-home backup.
A troubleshooting moment happened after a firmware update: the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. I found the operating mode had switched from self-consumption to a backup-priority setting. Restoring the schedule fixed it. That taught me to check settings, not just blame the solar battery. I keep a screenshot of charge and discharge patterns for comparison.
For my household, the real value is straightforward: use sunlight later, avoid peak rates, and have backup security without changing our routine much.
