Nighttime used to be the part of my electricity bill that annoyed me most. Our solar panels produced plenty during the day, but after dinner we started buying expensive grid power. I finally added a 10 kWh solar battery last spring, and the change has been more noticeable than I expected.
The installer mounted the battery in our garage beside the inverter. I had heard people casually call an inverter converter, although technically my unit is a hybrid inverter with built-in charge control. The installation took most of one morning. The only frustrating part was getting the monitoring app connected; it kept rejecting my Wi-Fi password until I rebooted the router and stood next to the battery while pairing it. Not glamorous, but that was the worst of the setup.
During the first week, I watched the battery charge from midday solar and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when our utility’s time-of-use rate jumps. Before storage, the dishwasher, cooking, heat pump, and evening lights all overlapped with that costly window. Now the battery handles nearly all of it. I still pull a little grid power on cloudy days, but my peak-hour consumption has dropped sharply.
Our monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $95 over the summer, even though the utility raised rates slightly. That’s about $85 saved in a typical month, which feels more real than watching a graph in an app.
I initially left the reserve at 20 percent, but after one stormy afternoon, the battery emptied faster than expected and switched to grid power during dinner. I raised the reserve to 35 percent. Since then, we’ve had enough backup for lights, refrigerator, and internet during two outages. It sacrifices some savings, but peace of mind is worth it. I check the battery before using the dryer, and this solar battery now makes evening power noticeably cheaper.
